The FBI director and former top Justice Department official has been taking criticism from Trump since Trump appointed him in 2017

Trump has regularly criticised Wray for role in probes into former president and was widely expected to fire him.

Trump celebrated the resignation of Christopher Wray from the FBI while praising his nominee Kash Patel as the “most qualified” candidate to lead the agency.

He was nominated to the post by Donald Trump in 2017, but the president-elect has said he wants to replace him.

FBI Director Chris Wray will step down from his post early next year, the bureau said on Wednesday, after Republican President-elect Donald Trump signaled his intent to fire the veteran official and replace him with firebrand Kash Patel.
